On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Woodhouse Spa Gainesville is honored to welcome local author Stephanie Marcil Meeker for an intimate Author Experience centered on storytelling, connection, community, and the extraordinary journey behind her memoir, When the Unthinkable Happens: A Journey of Faith, Friendship and God's Faithfulness through Unimaginable Loss.
Stephanie's story is deeply rooted in our Northern Virginia community—and it is one of friendship, devastating loss, an unexpected calling, and the decision to keep moving forward when life changes in an instant.
Meet Stephanie Meeker
Stephanie Meeker is a Northern Virginia writer, teacher and ministry leader whose life took an unimaginable turn in 2014 when her best friend, Michelle Castillo, was murdered.
In the aftermath, Stephanie and her husband, David, stepped forward to care for four of Michelle's children. Virginia court records confirm that the children were placed with the Meekers through Child Protective Services and that Michelle's estate plan had named the couple as guardians in the event something happened to the children's parents.
What followed was not simply a moment of helping a friend.
It became a journey spanning nearly a decade—through grief, foster care, court proceedings, parenting children experiencing profound loss, and ultimately an effort to overcome a provision in Virginia law that complicated the family's path toward adoption. Stephanie has since spoken about that journey and how the experience tested—and ultimately shaped—her understanding of faith, friendship, surrender and hope.
Her memoir, When the Unthinkable Happens, was published in December 2025 and tells that story through Stephanie's perspective.
Recently, Stephanie appeared on the Fed by the Fruit podcast for an extended conversation about Michelle, grief, raising the children, navigating the years that followed and finding a way forward when life looked nothing like the future she had imagined.
It is that very human story that we are honored to bring to Woodhouse Gainesville.
An Author Experience Designed for Connection
At Woodhouse, we believe wellness is about more than what happens inside a treatment room.
Sometimes restoration comes through slowing down. Sometimes it comes through conversation. And sometimes it comes from sitting across the table from someone whose story reminds us of the strength found in friendship, community and simply showing up for one another.
Our Author Experience was created with that spirit in mind.
Rather than a traditional book signing, we're creating two opportunities to meet Stephanie and experience her story in the warm, relaxing atmosphere of Woodhouse Gainesville.
Meet & Greet + Book Signing | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Spend the morning with Stephanie during our two-hour Meet & Greet and Book Signing.
Guests will have the opportunity to meet Stephanie, enjoy light treats and beverages, have their book personally signed and connect with others from our community.
Each ticket includes Stephanie's book, an author's tote bag, an exclusive bookmark and a special Woodhouse bonus card.
It is a beautiful opportunity for book lovers, friends and members of our community to come together around a story with local roots and a powerful message.
The Author's Table | 12:30–1:30 PM
For guests looking for an even more personal experience, The Author's Table will offer an intimate conversation with Stephanie in a small-group setting.
With only 10–12 seats available, guests will gather around the table for deeper conversation and Q&A while enjoying a thoughtfully prepared healthy tea-cup charcuterie offering at each place setting.
This isn't a stage and an audience.
It's a table.
A conversation.
And an opportunity to ask questions, listen, connect and spend time with the woman behind the pages.
